Happy Book Co

Squiggle Co was commissioned by Happy Book Co to illustrate a large-scale character series for a children’s calendar, bringing together storytelling, seasonal themes, and playful design. The project involved the creation of 250 unique illustrated characters, each designed to spark joy and capture the imagination of young audiences.

The brief was to develop characters that felt warm, friendly, and expressive, with a subtle kawaii-inspired style that enhanced their charm without overwhelming their individuality. Each character needed to be instantly recognisable at a glance, often brought to life through a simple activity or moment—such as an avocado riding a scooter or everyday objects given playful personalities.

Each month of the calendar was built around a specific theme, many of which reflected real-life seasonal moments and events. From autumn leaves and cosy imagery in October to snowflake characters and winter scenes in December, the illustrations were designed to feel timely, relatable, and engaging throughout the year.

Care was taken to ensure variety and consistency across the full set, balancing colour, expression, and character design so that every illustration felt distinct while still belonging to a cohesive visual world. The final collection delivers a joyful, character-driven calendar that helps Happy Book Co connect with children through humour, familiarity, and playful storytelling.
